Folding/Falling

This work is part of the series ‘Self as Repetition’ wherein I investigate the power of repetition by subduing myself to different repetitive acts, wanting to get close to the essence of (being a) pattern.

My aim for this work was to add an architectural-like element to the foyer of the Kunst Historisch Instituut (Art Historical Institute) in Amsterdam. For seven days I meticulously folded and piled a seemingly infinite amount of second-hand clothes into a pillar that took on the properties of the building’s design – while piling I was copying the colors and patterns of the 19th century beaux-arts interior. On the last day with only half a meter to go before reaching the ceiling the tower collapsed under its own weight.
