This is a proposal for the oldest walking-park in The Netherlands, De Worp in Deventer.
As a serie of semi-identical glass sculptures placed throughout the park, this work indicates the monumental status of the last poplar remained from the 550 poplar-trees planted here in 1822.
With its trunk circumference of about 6.5 meters, a height of 35 meters and a crown of 40 meters wide, the almost 200 years old ‘Giant of the Poplars’ is the largest and oldest “Marilandica” in the Netherlands and is listed in the National Register of Monumental Trees.
Large half-cylinders are casted in clear glass. The round side of the cylinders is almost opaque and shows a relief: a different part of the imprint of the Marilandica’s 6,5-meters-wide and 200-year-old bark. The other side is flat and polished and completely transparent; it catches daylight from a distance and continuously reflects the colours and movement of the surrounding. From close by the visitor can look through a clear volume of cast-glass, all the way to the relief on the rounded side.
As a subtle reminder of the history and the rest of the poplar trees that had their place here 200 years ago, the “clones” of the last Poplar are “planted” throughout the park. This proposal is following the walking character of the park and is in the harmony with its elegant character and clear structure.
