New York Public Library, The Elusive Chapter

The initial photo this work departed from shows the reading-room of The New York Public Library. I mirrored the image, designed it as a full-page spread and placed it at the bottom of an aquarium. By gradually adding cuttings of the same photo into the aquarium, then pouring water into this, I wanted to mimic the concept of a flood within a space playing on the shift of scale. I proceeded with these two actions in turn while at regular intervals photographing the process.

The disruption to the overall images and their sequence as a slideshow made the presented space more obscure. In this, photos follow each other like pages in a book. You can hear them turning. Gradually the walls of the library start shifting, water keeps pouring in, the painted ceiling breaks open, the reader gets buried under debris and chandeliers. The pace of the story is accelerating; the reader disappears in it, eager to get to the end. But, there is no ‘grand finale’: the story bites its own tail. The beginning is the end is the beginning.
